vaklam
The Polvera lexicon will launch Wednesday, January 7, 2009. It will follow a Saturday-Wednesday schedule and it will consist of eight rounds which means that each Saturday and Wednesday during the month will be a due date.

So, if you are looking for a creative way to kill some time in January, come on over.

Looking for the Florilegium. [11 Mar 2005|12:57am]

shiffer
Wow, this hasn't been used in a while. Still seems to be working, though. All members still acounted for, all interfaces still operable... and with me no longer on the Nobilist it seemed the fastest way to do this.

So yes. I need the Florilegium. All of it, or close enough to make no difference. Standard methods have turned up nothing, and so I turn to you. Does anyone know where I can find it now, or has an archived copy that can be mailed/webtransfered?

Eternal gratitude guaranteed...

Wiki Help [27 Sep 2004|05:31pm]

vaklam
A friend of mine wants to install the version of PHP Wiki that the Ocean Of Stories Wiki uses on his server but he's having trouble finding any online documentation or how-to information. Does anyone here know of a good source for that?

Thanks

Lord Entropy's Rule vs. the Lost 500 [27 Aug 2004|08:44am]

sben
So, the Lost 500 and Lord Entropy's Rule were my first two lexicons. I never found myself quite as "into" LER as I was with the Lost 500. I'm going to ramble a bit and toss out some half-baked theories as to why.

* The subject matter. I think the Lost 500 was more easily comprehensible as a finite subject, with well-understood genre possibilities. Never mind that we ended up choosing several of them; we had enough history with various forms of sci-fi that we could quickly come up with things to write. LER, on the other hand, didn't suggest any obvious genre hooks to me, forcing me to rely on my own creativity (the horror).

* The longer cycle. I think I started running out of steam towards the end. Three letters per turn worked fine for the Lost 500.

* LiveJournal. The Lost 500 had a discussion page within the wiki. It was crude and clumsy, but it was easy: Immediately after writing a new entry, I could pop over there and add a line or two. LER, on the other hand, had this LiveJournal group dealie. If I wanted to talk about something, there were a few hurdles: I needed to come to a different site, perhaps log in again, and weigh whether I thought the subject was "important" enough to start a new thread. Minor matters, and perhaps unique to me, but they added up to a moderate inhibition to discussing posts. And that seemed to take away some of the collaborative/friendly atmosphere, at least for me. I think the LiveJournal community was a good idea, but I think it ended up being counterproductive for me.

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts, even (or especially) if they take issue with my basic "LER didn't work as well as the Lost 500" premise.

Technical advice needed [27 Aug 2004|05:12pm]

shiffer
It's been a long time since this community has seen any traffic, and the Lexicon too seems to have been forgotten. I guess we should make one last effort and close it in style, but seeing as I can't even bring myself to do it, it really doesn't seem that likely. [Sigh]

Meanwhile, there's been growing interest in the Israeli Roleplaying Society regarding this 'Lexicon' thing I told them about some time back, and it's getting to the point where we want to set one up.

Enter technical issues. I'm looking for recommendations for Wiki software. It should be relatively simple to install and operate and support multiple languages. Free is also a plus.

I know the Nobilist archive is full of information like this, but since the move the Hitheyby I don't seem to be able to find the archives. This seems like a logical next step.

To Certain Unnamed Parties... [01 Jul 2004|01:17pm]

[ mood | cranky ]

We seem to be missing one copy of the Enchiridion of Interrogatories. We would like to take this moment to remind patrons that some books are locked up by the Court Library to ensure the safety of Creation and not out of some juvenile need to hoard information.

To the person(s) in possession of the book, we would like to remind them that they can always use our handy 24-hour drop box to return the book -- no questions asked, no charges pressed. We would most strongly urge them to take advantage of the book drop before they succumb to the temptation to actually read the thing and doom us all.

Sincerely,

Guide to the Lexicon [24 Jun 2004|09:45pm]

sben
Like previous lexicons, this one is probably intimidating to anyone who didn't participate. I've started a guide to the lexicon, but have only done A through H; I'll work on it tomorrow if it hasn't been finished by then.

The yarrowstalk runestick entry is done. I didn't have a wrap-up entry in me this time, but I'm still pretty pleased with its simplicity.

I have some half-baked thoughts about this lexicon. By the time we're more caught up, I hope to have gathered them into something a little useful, and will post them then.

Quick Note [22 Jun 2004|11:37am]

Entries for W,X only need one "Phantom Entry" (the one for Y,Z) not two like they normally do.

Gleek. I was just catching up with my entries, and now the database seems to have died. I hope I haven't broken anything...

Why didn't we do this before? [12 Jun 2004|01:35am]

shiffer
[I just realized that I posted this in the wrong place. So, so ashamed.]

I just want to point out how much I'm enjoying the entries for Surolam and Salvage Rights. It's great to actually see some interplay between the characters, and even the hint of a slightly progressive plot (it's my move, right, Tom? Wait for it). I've been thinking, and do we want to implement a comment system similar (or not) to the one used in the Paranoia Lexicon?

Oh, and Seven Lies and Twenty-Three Truths About Ulrich Hartkpof is now on my Amazon wishlist. Just so you know.

Later addtion: updated the Timeline again and corrected a few contradictions. I also think that the "breaking" of the New World should be on it, but I didn't know where to put it.

Ulrich Hartkpof [11 Jun 2004|02:11pm]

sben
I'm immensely curious to see how his entry will turn out. But that's not why I post.

No, I'm wondering about his name, and specifically, the spelling.

I would've expected it to be "Hartkopf". But no, it's "Hartkpof" in the first entry to reference him, and that was continued in the next round's entries. So, Hartkpof it is. It has a certain flair to it ("hart-k'-poff!"), and I wouldn't want it to change.

But I need to know: Was the spelling a typo, or was it intentional?

(Or is that a secret?)

Semyazza; Neuthrall [10 Jun 2004|11:06am]

sben
A quick note/reminder for the upcoming S and T round: I seeded Semyazza early in this lexicon, little knowing that an entity named Semyaza had been defined in the Lexicon of the Second Age. Whoever writes about Semyazza may choose to have them be different names for the same entity, or different entities altogether.

Props: The entry for Neuthrall was elegant. I thought about writing that entry, but it would have been quite mundane/expected by comparison.

Thoughtful commentary on lexicons [04 Jun 2004|10:06am]

sben
The 20' x 20' Room has a recent post, very thoughtful, on lexicons and their lifecycle and such. I highly recommend reading it.

Among other things, it mentions how lexicons seem to have three stages. I mentioned a few days ago that I wasn't getting any sense of a narrative or story or connection between entries, but that may have just been because we were in the first stage; in the last set or two, things show signs of starting to cohere a bit.

This Lexicon Go 'Round [04 Jun 2004|11:45am]

bluegargantua
Can I just say....

I'm really happy with a lot of my entries in the Lexicon this time around. I mean, I'm usually pretty happy with my entries, but Goltra has a strong voice and is especially well suited for the subject matter and... Yeah, I'm feelin' good about this set.

Timeline updated [02 Jun 2004|06:39pm]

shiffer
It is my belief that everything that happened at a specific time (everything with "incident" or "affair" in the title, for example) should be marked on the timeline. I've just spent an hour cross referencing everything I thought should be there and updating the timeline accordingly. I think I got it all right, and there should be no discrepancies. Given my mortal status, however, it's always possible that I've missed something. Plesae take a moment and review the page, and if you find that any alterations are necessary I'd like to know.

Also, if someone believes that not everything should be on the timeline, this is probably the time to say so.
